For nearly a century our focus has been on the full range driver. One voice coil. No crossover. The most direct path from recording to listener. It is the reason Lowther speakers are known for immediacy, clarity and natural tone.
Even so, every 8 inch full range driver in the world faces the same physical limit. Above about 10 kHz output falls sharply. This has always been part of the Lowther signature. The drivers still reproduce almost all of the musical information and do so with remarkable precision, but modern recordings and higher quality digital masters now reveal more at the top end than they did decades ago.
During the development of the Almira and Edilia we tested this carefully. We brought in listeners of all ages. Some could hear well above 14 or 15 kHz. Others, especially those over 60, showed hearing loss above 10 kHz. Yet all of them described a clear improvement with a small, properly matched tweeter taking over at the natural roll off of the main unit.
What they noticed was not an increase in brightness. They noticed better placement of instruments in space, a stronger sense of air in the recording and more stable stereo imaging. In other words, information that sits at the top of the spectrum still shapes what we hear even if we cannot consciously detect the highest tones themselves.
This is why we designed the Lowther DXT Supertweeter.
There is no crossover to complicate the signal to the full range driver. A simple first order capacitor allows the tweeter to sit gently on top of the main unit. It begins where the 8 inch driver naturally falls away. The clarity and immediacy of the full range driver remain untouched. The presentation gains extra detail that modern recording chains are capable of preserving.
The DXT is available both as a built in tweeter for the Almira and Edilia and as a free standing pair that connects directly to any Lowther cabinet using 8 inch drivers. There is no installation. Connect to the terminals and the tweeter becomes part of the system.
We have received very positive feedback from those who tried the pre-production units on the Acousta, Corner Acousta, Voigt 4 ft Horn, Edilia and TP2. Younger listeners immediately noticed an increase in spatial precision. Older listeners reported the same improvement even if their measured high frequency hearing was limited.
